FINAL farewells were being said to a ‘respected’ South Yorkshire businessman whose funeral was due to take place today.
The funeral of John Hurst, of construction experts George Hurst & Sons, was taking place at St Margaret’s Parish Church Swinton at 2.45pm, followed by a private cremation in Rotherham.
John died at home in High Melton, aged 57, on December 27, following a long illness. He leaves wife Kath and children Michaela, Phillip, Sean, Ryan and Ian. John, who is outlived by his father Eric, also leaves sisters Mary, Theresa, Ann and Ruth as well as six grandchildren, Grace, Heidi, Lincoln, Lucy, Emily and Hariott.
Hundreds of people were expected at the funeral including many of his colleagues from Mexborough-based George Hurst & Sons.
Norman Fanthorpe, for the firm said: “From the early 1980s, John continued the work started by his father and continued to grow George Hurst & Sons from a small plumbing business in Swinton to the multi-disciplinary construction firm it is today, employing more than 70 people.
“Innovative and forward looking, John fuelled this growth by embracing new technology and modern construction techniques.
“A proud Yorkshireman and inspirational leader, hosts of people in the South Yorkshire construction industry will miss a friend and most respected colleague.”
