HUNDREDS of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to a Barnsley man who died after becoming trapped in underground machinery at the National Coal Mining Museum.

Mining electrician Michael Buckingham, aged 58, of Grimethorpe, was working on a project to expand the museum’s underground tour when tragedy struck. He suffered crush injuries to his chest.

Around 500 residents attended his funeral at St Luke’s Church, Grimethorpe, which was followed by burial.

The Heath and Safety Executive is investigating.
