Funding puts swimmers under starter's orders

SWIMMERS are under starter's orders in Chapeltown - where nearly £1,000 in sponsorship will pay for new starting blocks.

Chapeltown Amateur Swimming Club treasurer Claire Chapman completed the London Marathon to collect sponsorship of 481.97. The figure was then doubled by Chesterfield-based Line One Sales who had agreed to match the funds Claire raised.

The club has been training swimmers and competing in competitions since 1960 at its home pool, Chapeltown Baths. The club is run by parents and volunteers and relies on fundraising to maintain and replace pool equipment, training essentials, and items in its own gym. It has been hoping to replace its aging starting blocks for some time.

Chairman Tom Barlow said: "Claire rightfully got a huge round of applause at our last club meeting. We're all extremely grateful to Claire, and to Line One, for raising such important funds for the club."

Claire, whose daughter Billy swims for the club, completed the marathon in four hours and 27 minutes.

Chapeltown Swimming Club is open to anyone aged eight and over from all areas of Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley. The club competes in the Barnsley Minor League, regional galas, and open invitation galas. For more details log onto www.chapeltownasc.org or call in at Chapeltown Baths on a Thursday evening between 7.30pm and 9.30pm and ask for Robert Grayson.
