YOUNGSTERS who basked on the beach in Sheffield’s Peace Gardens were encouraged to take a break from their buckets and spades and pick up a book.

Sheffield Council’s library service held a Bookstart beach party which included reading sessions, a book-themed treasure hunt, and other library-themed activities.

The Little Library vehicle – a children’s mobile library – was there with books available to borrow.

Meanwhile, Bookstart Bear, the furry mascot of the city’s campaign to get children reading, was leading a storytelling session for toddlers.

Parents who had brought children along were invited to join in, and there was time for play, too.

Further events are planned to encourage young readers.

Activities include the Little Library visiting The Meadows Children’s Centre, Shirecliffe Road, Shirecliffe, from 1pm to 2.30pm today.
