An annual fun day in memory of a Sheffield steelworker crushed to death at work is to be held later this month.

Dave Roberts, aged 26, from Parson Cross, died in an accident at Sheffield Forgemasters in June 2010.

Since then friends and family have organised ‘Big Dave’s Fun Day’ as an annual event in memory of him to raise cash for local charities.

This year money will go to Bluebell Wood children’s hospice.

The event is to be held at Jubilee Sports Club, Claywheels Lane, Wadsley Bridge, on August 24.

Friend and organiser Rob Lawson said: “Dave was only 26 when he died and was embarking on starting a family of his own. Dave loved kids and was the first to volunteer to entertain other peoples, as well as the fact he was still a big kid himself.

“We always spend a couple of minutes at some point during the event where we make an announcement over the PA system where we remind people of why the day was set up.”

Activities planned include a climbing wall, a paintball range, giant hamster balls and go-karts. Also on show will be football freestyler Dan Magness to demonstrate his skills.
