Free parking will be offered in Sheffield on Saturday afternoons in the run-up to Christmas, it has been confirmed today.
The Sheffield Council scheme will apply at council-run car parkings from 2pm on the three Saturdays before Christmas - December 5, 12 and 19.
Like last year, it will apply to district centres such as those on Ecclesall Road and in Hillsborough.
Coun Terry Fox, cabinet member for transport, said:“We hope that offering free parking in the run up to Christmas will provide a boost to the local economy by encouraging people to visit the city and supporting local retailers during the crucial festive period.”
The scheme only applies to Sheffield Council-run car parks, not those run by private companies. Other waiting restrictions will still be enforced.
Opposition Liberal Democrat Coun Joe Otten had submitted a motion to today’s full council meeting, calling for free Christmas parking incentives to be brought in.
His motion said that nearb y competing centres such as Rotherham and Chesterfield offered such incentives and ‘thriving’ high streets were central to the city’s economy.
