Four dead in horror accidents
A BOY aged ten is amongst four people who died following separate accidents on the region's roads over the weekend.
The boy and a man were passengers in a Ford Escort being driven along the A619, Baslow Road in Chesterfield when the vehicle was in collision with an East Midlands Emergency Ambulance.
Two more people also lost their lives in the North Derbyshire area over the weekend.
The first accident occurred on Friday night at 8.30pm when the male driver of a Ford Mondeo died after his car was in collision with a Mercedes SLK convertible on the A619 Chander Hill, Holymoorside, Chesterfield.
And at 7.30am on Saturday morning both lanes of the M1 were closed for hours when a white Ford Transit panel van was in collision with a DAF tipper lorry between junctions 29 and 29a on the north bound carriageway.
A 22-year-old man who was driving the transit died at the scene.
None of the victims of the three accidents has yet been named.
Derbyshire Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed any of the three accidents to contact them on the witness appeal line 01773 572929.
The accidents led to complete chaos for drivers using or attempting to access or exit the M1.
One driver from Dronfield criticised the transport for lack of information.
He claims warning signs over the carriageway did not give any useful information.
He said: "I was stuck in traffic for most of Saturday afternoon without knowing why.
"I drove past countless electronic M1 signs but not one explicity warned of what lay ahead or where we should expect to come off.
"The signs just told us not go above 40mph - fat chance, we were stationary.
"If there had been a system in place to stop us getting on the motorway in the first place there wouldn't have been such a queue. But there was nothing, no sign, no policeman on the entrance to the motorway.
"The first I knew of it was when I became stuck in what became an M1 car park.
"If drivers had known they could have taken an alternative route. The police cars obviously managed that - we never saw one."
