Former teacher celebrates 106th birthday
A FORMER Sheffield primary school teacher who taught hundreds of city youngsters to read and write has celebrated her 106th birthday.
Maisie Linstead was joined by her sons Roger and David to celebrate the occasion at Tapton Edge Rest Home, Tapton, where she now lives.
Born and bred in Sheffield, Maisie left the city briefly to go to teacher training college in London but returned in 1923 to begin her teaching career, working at Heeley Bank and Neepsend schools.
Son David, aged 74, from Ecclesall, said: "She was a gifted teacher and won a prize for infant teaching at her college. She will have taught hundreds of people in Sheffield to read and write – most will be in their seventies by now."
Maisie, formerly Parkin, met her husband Charles at Sheffield Shakespeare Players – an amateur dramatics group.
When the couple were married she had to give up teaching for a few years at the request of the local authority.
Maisie said: "In those days it was a requirement of the local authority in Sheffield that women had to stop teaching as soon they got married."
But during the war, with the men away fighting, she resumed her career. The couple had two sons, Roger, David. Charles died in 1964, aged 59.
David said: "She is very independent for her age. She drove her car until she was 92 and lived in sheltered accommodation until she was 99. We'd like to wish her a happy 106th birthday."
