Former teacher of Sean Bean dies

A FORMER Sheffield infants school headteacher who taught Hollywood star Sean Bean has died aged 93.

Marian Meredith was headteacher of Handsworth Infant School and still lived in Handsworth.

She never married but considered her children to be the thousands of youngsters she taught over the years.

One of her proudest boasts was that she taught Sheffield-born actor Sean Bean.

Marian recently appeared on TV show The Way We Were, when she was filmed sharing her memories of teaching.

She grew up in Woodhouse Mill, attended the former Woodhouse Mill Church from being a girl and later St James's Church, Tythe Barn Lane, Woodhouse.

Marian taught at Woodhouse West and Woodhouse East Schools before becoming headteacher at Handsworth.

She was an avid theatre-goer, who loved the drama, opera, music and art and travelled widely around Europe and attended coffee mornings and whist drives at Woodhouse Wesleyan Chapel.

Marian leaves a niece Jane Ridgeway, three great-nieces and seven great-great nieces and nephews of whom she was immensely fond.

Her funeral will be held at St James's Church in Woodhouse at 11am on Friday February 5, which would have been her 94th birthday, where there will be a collection for the NSPCC children's charity.
