The father of a former Sheffield Wednesday player is understood to have been murdered in a pub beer garden.

Darrell Clarke was attacked in the beer garden or smoking area of The Boat pub, in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton.

Mr Clarke is understood to be the father of Leon Clarke, who played for Wednesday between 2007-2010, and is now a striker for Bury Football Club.

Sheffield United also made a bid for Clarke in 2013.

His 50-year-old father suffered a ‘serious head injury’ according to police.

He died in hospital on Saturday.

The club said in a statement: “Bury Football Club are aware of an incident over the weekend that brought the unfortunate death of Leon Clarke’s father.

“As a club we extend our deepest sympathies towards Leon and the Clarke family.

“Leon will be allowed the time to grieve and will receive the full support of everyone at the Football Club during this difficult time.”

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.
