Fire investigators have concluded their examination of a house in Barnsley where a man and woman perished.

They spent most of yesterday examining the charred remains of the mid-terrace property on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar, after the blaze broke out the day before.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 6.50pm on Tuesday and battled to revive Katherine Collard, who was 55 and Erwin Albers, who was 62, but they could not be saved.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious but fire investigators have sent some items away for forensic examination to try to establish an exact cause.

It could take weeks for the results to come back.

The fire started in a bedroom.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The families of the deceased have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.”

Post mortem examinations are expected to take place today.
