The posts offer troops the chance to gain more experience and skills to help in their quest for jobs.

Chesterfield Special Cylinders, which also employs five former full-time soldiers, has been presented with a certificate by Brigadier Greville Bibby, senior army officer for North East England, in recognition of its support.

Mark Pinder, managing director at the company, said: “Experience shows me that people from the Armed Forces have a genuine ‘can do’ approach to getting the job done.

“The company now employs several people who have served on various military tours or are highly experienced and skilled reservists and they work very well with the rest of our time-served team.”

Lance Corporal Rick O’Gara, among the reservist soldiers on work placement at the Sheffield steel firm, said: “The work has been interesting, varied and very ‘hands on’.

“I started by fitting adaptors to cylinders and building the ends, then I moved to shot-blasting and stamping the cylinders and have also inspected some of the larger cylinders. I am learning a lot of new skills.”

Bigadier Bibby said: “Chesterfield Special Cylinders absolutely recognises the benefits of employing people with military training, service and background.”
