Former England and Sheffield Wednesday football star Carlton Palmer has launched an online competition – giving four winners the chance to spend a weekend with him at his villa in Portugal.

Carlton, of Beauchief, aims to raise £10,000 for Broomhall-based Cavendish Cancer Care and has also organised a 10km charity run taking place in Ecclesall Woods on Sunday, November 24.

The race starts at the Rising Sun, Abbey Lane, at 10am.

All are welcome to take part and Carlton is keen for more people to sign up.

He said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has sponsored me so far. It’s for a great cause and I want to try to raise as much money as I can.

“I know people are struggling to make ends meet right now, but people are still putting their hands in their pockets and I really do appreciate it.”

Carlton has also launched a Twitter competition and wants four people to donate £500 to Cavendish to spend the weekend with him and his wife at his villa in the Algarve – the offer does not include flights.

Carlton said: “This is about getting some lads together, having a game of golf, meeting some footballers and raising money for a good cause.”
