Football fans will hold a minute's applause to remember former Sheffield Wednesday striker Dalian Atkinson who died after he was Tasered.

Supporters at Aston Villa, the club Atkinson moved to after leaving Wednesday, will remember the popular striker in the 10th minute of Villa's Sky Bet Championship match against Huddersfield tonight.

The 48-year-old died after being Tasered by police while visiting his father's home in Telford, Shropshire, at around 1.30am yesterday.

Villa fans had wanted to take umbrellas to tonight's game as a tribute to the footballer after one supporter celebrated an Atkinson goal at Wimbledon by running onto the pitch and shielding him from the rain with a brolly.

But the club will not allow fans to take umbrellas to the game on health and safety grounds.

Instead, members of the club's fan squad will instead hold up umbrellas around the stadium in the 10th minute during the one minute's applause.

Paying tribute to Atkinson, an Aston Villa spokesman said: "Aston Villa is saddened to hear of the death of our former striker Dalian Atkinson. Dalian undoubtedly provided real memorable moments during his time in claret and blue."
