Fly-tippers and litter louts cost Sheffield Council £4m each year

A staggering £4 million pounds is being wasted every year clearing up after litter louts across Sheffield.

The Star is today launching a campaign to highlight the excellent work people do to keep their communities clean – and name and shame litter hotspots across the city. More than £4 million is spent each year by Sheffield Council clearing litter from parks and streets – money which could be better spent on vital services.

Now residents, communities and businesses are being urged to back the Clean Sheffield campaign and dispose of litter in bins.

The council’s 200 street-cleaning staff – together with an army of selfless volunteers – clear 500 tones of litter and rubbish off the streets every month.

Coun Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for the environment, said: “In these times of budget cuts and austerity, it is sad to see that due to the selfish behaviour of the few, we as a council pay more than £4 million to pick up litter. This is something that can definitely be avoided if we all play our small part.”
