Floods aid agency goes into Burma
A CHRISTIAN aid agency which helped Sheffield's flood victims last summer is one of the few agencies to be allowed into Burma to help with the relief operation following the devastating cyclone.
ADRA UK, in association with Sheffield's Adventist Day churches, supplied 100 families in Catcliffe and Winn Gardens with cleaning materials and food packages when flood water wreaked havoc through their homes.
Last month the charity also collected a massive 6,000 from residents across the city in door-to-door collections – money which is now helping its aid work in Burma's Irrawaddy delta region.
A group of youngsters aged four to 17 from Burngreave and other areas of the city also took part in a charity bike ride around Rother Valley Lake to raise money.
The charity is one of the few relief agencies allowed into the area devastated by Cyclone Nargis on May 3, which left more than 22,000 people dead and one million homeless.
It is working to provide food, medicines and materials to make shelter to those affected.
Pastor Andrew Rashford-Hewitt, from the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Andover Street, Burngreave, said: "Once again the generosity of the people of Sheffield is proving to save lives whether it is a flood on our doorstep or a flood thousands of miles away."
