Flood fund passes £1m barrier
A RELIEF fund set up to support South Yorkshire families whose homes were devastated in the summer's floods has topped the £1million mark - 100 days after the worst rains fell.
Pauline Grice, chief executive of the South Yorkshire Community Foundation which set up The South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Fund, said the amount was "beyond our wildest dreams".
She added: "When the fund was set up I set a target of 500,000 and a lot of people thought that was extremely optimistic.
"The fund is now just over 1million. It is wonderful, beyond our wildest dreams."
The fund, which has also involved the four South Yorkshire councils, is being shared out between hundreds of victims across the region to alleviate hardship in the aftermath of the floods which hit the hardest on June 25.
Ms Grice said: "It's gone to the areas that were in the news - Catcliffe, Toll Bar, Bentley - but also the ones that haven't, in Thorpe Hesley, Whiston, other parts of Rotherham, and parts of Sheffield such as Abbeydale Road.
"There have been pockets of people flooded and this money is going to them. I knew deep in my heard that the people of South Yorkshire wouldn't let the people of South Yorkshire down."
