Flood alerts have been issued for two areas in Sheffield as today's downpours show no sign of relenting.

Both the River Don from Penistone to Kelham Island and the River Sheaf and Porterbrook are at risk of flooding, according to the Environment Agency.

The alert was issued in response to the readings on local river level gauges - with the river levels expected to peak this evening.

The alert states that there could be fast rising river levels as well as surface water problems in the two areas.

The Environment Agency said: "Please start to think about what you need to do in response to this alert. If you have a flood plan please refer to it. Take care near the areas of concern and monitor the local weather conditions. We are monitoring the situation and have staff in the field checking for and clearing blockages."
