A fleet of seven new hi-tech buses have hit the roads in Chesterfield as part of a £700,000 investment by transport operator Stagecoach.

The E200 MMC single deckers will operate between Chesterfield and Clay Cross on service 54 – one of Stagecoach’s most popular commuter routes.

In a first for Stagecoach buses in Chesterfield, the vehicles will provide passengers with free on-board USB charging points allowing customers to charge mobile phones, tablets, laptops and other electronic devices while they travel.

The new buses also have free wifi, high back, two-tone leather seats and environmentally-friendly Euro 6 engines.

Service 54 operates via Hasland, Grassmoor and North Wingfield.

Matt Davies, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said it was necessary to invest in the new hi-tech fleet as the route is very popular with commuters who often use phones, tablets and other devices on their way to work.

He added: “The 54 is a popular commuter route, which has seen significant growth in recent years, so we are delighted to be able to introduce these industry-leading buses on this service as part of our commitment to continued investment.

“Many passengers use the service to travel to and from work.

“Electronic devices such as mobiles and tablets are an ever increasingly important part of this commuter journey so we hope customers will benefit from the USB charging points, as well as free wifi and the comfort of high back, leather seats.”

All of Stagecoach services in Chesterfield are low-floor to provide easy access for wheelchair users and passengers with buggies.

The company is part of the wider Stagecoach Yorkshire firm, which employs 1,177 staff and operates a fleet of 419 buses across the region that carry 46.5 million passengers across 19.2 million miles annually.
