Flats scheme in store for supermarket car park

DEVELOPERS are applying for permission to build 62 flats on part of a Waitrose car park in Sheffield.

Sheffield-based DLP Planning has applied to build the new homes on a car park and recycling facility at the store on Ecclesall Road.

The recycling facilities would be moved to another part of the car park and a new L-shaped block of flats built which would have 30 one-bedroom and 32 two-bedroom flats, and 50 car parking spaces on the ground floor.

The flats would be built in a part six-storey, part seven-storey block, with large, "industrial-type" windows. It would also feature a green roof.

Planning officers say in a report to today's City Centre, South and East Planning Board that the traditional red-brick materials would reflect the character of the nearby Baptist church and would fit in to the street scene.

But Sharrow Community Forum complain there is no "appetite" for flats in the area and building another block would upset the balance between residential and community buildings.

DLP Planning will donate 50,290 towards the provision of open space within a kilometre of the site, as well as 7,500 towards the city's car club.

Twelve flats would be made available to rent from a council-approved social landlord.

Recommending approval planning officers say the scheme is a "contemporary residential block of architectural merit".

It adds: "It will deliver 62 residential apartments of which at least 12 will be affordable – these units will introduce vitality to the area."
