Fitting way to honour forces
TODAY gives us all a chance to share our pride in the armed forces as events take place throughout the country to mark Armed Forces and Veterans Day.
For several reasons, this is a particularly well-timed occasion.
It comes just days after the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which surely must go down as one of the most heroic moments in the history of our armed forces, with many only too pleased once more to acknowledge the role of those who sacrificed so much in service of their country.
It also takes place in the shadow of current conflicts as men and women once more place themselves in danger simply because it is their duty to do so.
No matter what your views may be on the cause of international conflicts, or the morality of nations taking up arms for whatever reason, it must be forever remembered that this is done at a human level.
And those individuals who devote their youthful lives to serving their nation and its people deserve to learn that their communities are aware of the debt we owe to them.
This day of celebration really is a fitting way to achieve that end.
Follow this route only with caution
THOSE with long memories will look back fondly on the days when almost all of the business of local councils was conducted within committees - most of which were open to the public and exposed to scrutiny by the press.
Things are vastly different today in Sheffield, with many minor matters delegated to officers and major decisions reached in Cabinet meetings by a small group of handpicked councillors.
Now the Government is insisting that further changes be made, including whether Sheffield should have an elected mayor, which would see much of a council's powers invested into the hands of one individual.
Experiences elsewhere of elected mayors do not fill many observers with much confidence that this is how a democratic society should operate.
We believe that anyone pressing for this option should do so with the utmost caution.
