A BOBBY will be covering a different beat in May when he swaps his helmet and truncheon for a pair of trainers and shorts to take part in Sheffield’s Half Marathon.
PC Mick Hellewell is hoping to finish the 13-mile race to raise at least £500 for Cancer Research, after a close friend died last year.
PC Hellewell said: “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and it is not just the sufferers but also their families left behind.
“I recently started running to get fit, so I decided to combine that with raising money for a good cause and I thought the half marathon would be an achievable goal.
“If the money I raise helps to stop just one person suffering or losing a loved one to cancer then it is worthwhile.”
PC Hellewell, of the Hasland and St Leonard’s Safer Neighbourhood Team in Chesterfield, hopes to complete the race in under two hours - and in preparation for the event on May 8 has been getting up at 4am to do training runs before work.
