Fishy project for schools
MYSTERIES of mating are being unravelled by youngsters at four Sheffield schools who have taken on a nature project that's more than a little fishy.
Pupils from the junior and infant schools in Stocksbridge have teamed up with friends from St Ann's RC and Oughtibridge primaries to try to breed sticklebacks.
The challenge has been organised by the Steel City Project with support from the Environment Agency, and has proved to be both fun and informative.
Pupils caught the distinctive three-spined fish in the Rivelin Valley, and then put them in fish tanks in their classrooms.
The aim has been to observe the life cycle and breeding patterns of the creatures and then to release the adults and young fish back into the wild.
Pupils in the four schools have been watching and reporting on the behaviour of the sticklebacks, as well as feeding and caring for them.
Steel Valley Project officer Kate Hughes said: "This project aims to bring to light the fact that although it may be difficult to see, our many local rivers, ponds and streams are quietly teeming with life.
"It links in very well with the National Curriculum."
