Armed police were called to deal with reports of a man brandishing a weapon - which turned out to be a fishing rod - near a Sheffield supermarket.

Officers attended the scene near Morrisons, on Oxclose Park Road North in Halfway, on Monday afternoon.

A police spokesman said the reports that had come in from the public were of a man waving a ‘long armed weapon’ on the street.

She added: “When officers did attend and made some inquiries it turned out that he had managed to make a fishing road look like a weapon.”

After the drama the man was then arrested at the scene under section 16 of the Firearms Act.

The police helicopter was also in attendance.
