A new project to encourage people to walk more and take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle is being launched in Barnsley.

Sport and fitness organisation Team Activ has developed the new Walk Barnsley project, which is a three-year scheme aimed at helping people to get fit and stay trim.

Team Activ will this month launch a number of guided walks around Barnsley town centre to help people get started.

Anyone wanting a stroll can pick up a free Barnsley Town Centre Walking Guide with tips, helpful website addresses and a map.

The booklet also includes a chart detailing the time and distance it takes to walk between many of the town centre’s main locations including the Civic Theatre, Barnsley Hospital, the markets and Barnsley Interchange.

Team Activ Founder Darren Padgett said: “This is all about getting people to take the first steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

“Walking is a great form of physical activity – it’s free and easy to do anywhere and unlike other activities, you can build it into your day.”
