First bids for Arctic Monkeys drumsticks

THE first bids have been made by readers of The Star in a charity auction for South Yorkshire soldiers supported by Arctic Monkeys' drummer Matt Helders and city boxing champion Ross Burkinshaw.

Matt has donated a pair of signed drumsticks used for warming up on his recent tour of the UK, Europe and North America.

Super flyweight champion Ross has given autographed gloves he used when he challenged for the British title against Lee Haskins in July.

Bids of 125 have been made for each of the items.

Money raised in the auction will go to Third Battalion The Rifles' Wristband Appeal, which supports soldiers injured and the families of those killed.

Fourteen members of a battle group led by 3 Rifles, which includes soldiers from other regiments such as engineers and medics, have been killed since they were posted to Sangin in Helmand Province in October.

Ross is a rifleman in the battalion but has been allowed to remain in Sheffield to develop his professional boxing career.

To bid, email richard.marsden@thestar.co.uk or write to Richard Marsden, The Star, York Street, Sheffield, S1 1PU.

The deadline is February 29. Include the value of your bid, your name, address, email address and telephone number.
