SMALL businesses and Sheffield Council have joined forces to launch a new scheme to provide extra hospitality to armed forces personnel and their families.
Local traders are being invited to offer members of the armed forces anything from a warm welcome to a discount.
The project is called Heroes Welcome in Sheffield.
The scheme was launched by Sheffield councillor and former soldier Coun Clive Skelton who were joined by members of the Federation of Small Businesses.
Gordon Millward, regional chairman of the FSB, said: “This is a great scheme that recognises the efforts of servicemen and women who make massive sacrifices to protect the UK’s interests.
“We all owe them a debt of gratitude and if local businesses can do a little bit to make their lives and those of their families a little more comfortable then it’s well worth doing.
“By joining the scheme Sheffield businesses are demonstrating support to the armed forces and offering a warm welcome and recognition, like a small discount.
He added: “The FSB is committed to the principle and we want our members to join the scheme and promote their contribution through the Heroes Welcome in Sheffield website.”
Participating businesses will be able to check if someone is serving in the armed forces because they are issued with an ID card.
Firms who participate will also be able to promote the offer by displaying a window sticker which will be provided to all the business that join.
