FIREFIGHTERS raced to a Sheffield tower block after a blaze broke out on the third floor and smoke-logged the rest of the building.
The 12-storey building on Tenter Street, opposite the HSBC headquarters and next to the former West Bar police station in the city centre, caught fire at 9.40am yesterday when contractors were carrying out work.
They dialled 999 after flames broke out near a toilet area, with an electrical fault blamed for the incident.
Workmen got out of the building unharmed but firefighters had to do a precautionary sweep, checking every single floor.
They also had to ventilate the block.
At the height of the incident five fire engines lined up outside alongside an incident command unit and a police car.
Crews left the building at around noon.
