A man was rescued from a smoke-filled house in Sheffield after he fell asleep while food was cooking.

The man, aged in his 40s, could not be roused by neighbours who raised the alarm.

Crews were alerted to the incident on Dawlands Close, Manor, at 9.40pm yesterday.

The occupant of the flat was led to safety and checked by paramedics but did not need to go to hospital.

Last night firefighters also dealt with a pile of tyres set alight on Colliery Road, Brightside, Sheffield and grassland set on fire on Undergate Road, Dinnington, Rotherham.

At 1.25am today a wheelie bin was set alight on Churchill Avenue, Maltby, Rotherham.
