A Barnsley pensioner was taken to hospital after an early morning blaze in her home today.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was found by firefighters in her smoke-filled lounge when firefighters arrived at her bungalow on Rockingham Close, Birdwell, at 5am.

They helped the OAP to safety and extinguished a blaze which had broken out in a bedroom.

The fire was contained to the one room but there was smoke damage throughout the bungalow.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.

Last night firefighters returned to the former Oakwell brewery on Pontefract Road, Barnsley, after a fire involving a huge pile of smouldering plastic, which initially broke out on September 1, reignited.
