Firefighters praised for saving Rotherham pensioner

Firefighters have been praised for leading an elderly woman to safety from her burning home.

The blaze broke out in a sheltered housing complex in Queen Street, Swinton, Rotherham, at around 6.45am.

It started in the woman's toaster and spread through the rest of the kitchen.

Carers helped neighbours out of their homes as a precaution.

Group Manager Simon Rodgers said: “The flat was full of thick, black smoke and the first firefighters on the scene did a fantastic job of leading the resident to safety, dealing with the fire and looking after the other older people who were living in flats nearby. They did a brilliant job.”
