Firefighters have spent this morning battling a blaze at a former nightclub in Barnsley.

They were alerted to flames at the old Chicago Rock club, New Street, Barnsley town centre, at 12.45am and spent three hours at the scene.

Crews were called back at 5.20am after reports that the building was well alight again.

There are currently eight engines at the scene.

Firefighters are urging motorists to avoid the area and said a number of roads around the burning club have been closed.

The nearby Alhambra shopping centre is open.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
