CALLS to South Yorkshire firefighters rocketed the during the heatwave – with 566 received over the weekend alone.
There were 160 calls made on Friday, 208 on Saturday and 198 on Sunday, when fire operators usually receive an average of around 110 calls a month.
The calls alerted fire crews to 154 small fires, when the monthly average is around 20 and there were 119 small arson attacks, compared to a monthly average of 15.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue bosses said analysis of call-outs show a link between warmer weather and small fires, such as grass and bin blazes.
Ahead of the forthcoming firework season, a fire service spokesman warned bonfires should also be kept away from buildings, trees and shrubs.
To reduce the risk of arson attacks, residents are being urged to put wheelie bins out on the morning of collection.
