SHEFFIELD Council leader Coun Julie Dore has pledged there will be a final free garden waste collection before a new paid-for service is launched.
The council is replacing free collections with the subscription-based service to save £1.5 million per year.
The planned new service was criticised by The Star reader Geoff Birtles, a retired magazine editor, of Dore, who said: “I am disappointed a popular and successful service is being replaced with a pay-as-you-go facility which will likely lead to more fly tipping and garden bonfires. This is in effect a stealth tax.”
Coun Dore said: “We will be carrying out a final collection of green waste before the new service starts for people who have built up garden waste over the winter.”
Dates for the final collection have not yet been decided.
