SWEETHEARTS Ken and Sheila Webster have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the way their union began – with pie and peas.

The couple, of Longley, marked the milestone day on Friday, December 23 – 50 years to the day they tied the knot at St Aidan’s Church, Manor, Sheffield, after a two year engagement.

Lifelong amateur photographer Ken, aged 73, said: “We had the reception at the hall across the road and later we all went to the New Inn pub in Duke Street.

“Sheila and I left earlier than the others and on the way up the road we called at a shop for a pie and peas supper which we ate on our way home, I in my suit and Sheila still in her wedding dress.

“We really enjoyed that pie and peas, I can tell you, and the woman in the shop was somewhat surprised to see us.

“Someone arranged all the bed sheets so we could not get in bed without having to remake the bed – no doubt they had a laugh about that downstairs!”

History repeated itself this year when Ken enjoyed pie and peas again on their anniversary.

He also bought Sheila, 68, who has a heart condition, a bunch of flowers and they enjoyed a quiet day at home.

The Sheffield-born couple have three children, five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
