A CITY optician helped a rising fencing star bag an award at a competition in Sheffield after stepping in to provide emergency contact lenses when she left hers at home.

Elinor Robinson, from Barry in South Wales, was in Sheffield representing Wales in the Girls Under 18s British Youth Fencing Championships when she realised she had forgotten to pack her lenses.

Her glasses wouldn’t fit under her fencing mask, so she hot-footed it to Specsavers in Catcliffe to see if they could provide her with some replacement lenses.

Thanks to a fast response - store manager Sam Watts even drove to the English Institute of Sport in Attercliffe to deliver the lenses in person - Elinor was able to compete and went on to come third.

Sam said: “We were very happy to go above and beyond to help Elinor compete, and the whole team is thrilled that she performed so well on the day.”
