Feast of colour as Chinese community celebrates start of Year of the Monkey

AN EXPLOSION of colour greeted the Chinese New Year as hundreds of people from communities across the region came together to celebrate.

Red lanterns and bright banners bringing messages of optimism adorned the main hall at King Edward VII lower school. But then it was show time - and the youngsters who had spent so long rehearsing cooked up a treat of colour and sound.

The Lion Dance opened the event with one gold and one red lion performing a mesmerising and intricate show in traditional Chinese style.

It was an event where mums, dads, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters meet up to wish each other happiness and prosperity for the coming 12 months.

People from six Chinese associations in Sheffield and dozens of others from towns across South Yorkshire and the north Midlands joined together.

Organisers have been planning the show for months and will begin the whole process again this May for next year. Thursday was the official start to the Chinese New Year, which brings in the Year of the Monkey, but celebrations go on for two weeks.

Chinese families across the region have been 'Spring' cleaning their homes as New Year approached to sweep out bad luck and pessimism.

Simon Wan was there with his family and friends. He said: "It's a great time and a time when the Chinese community gets together to celebrate."

Dignitaries from Manchester and both the Sheffield and Chesterfield Mayors attended the lively show, which involved more than 100 children aged from about five to late-teens.
