A house fire in Barnsley in which two people perished was not started accidently, investigators believe.

Katherine Collard, aged 55, and Erwin Albers, 62, died in the blaze on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar on Tuesday, July 7, despite the efforts of neighbours and emergency services to rescue the couple.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the cause of the fire was ‘most likely not accidental,’ but no-one else is being sought in connection with the blaze.

A fire service spokesman said: “Fire officers have concluded their investigations into the cause of a fire in which two people died on Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar.

“It is thought the cause of the fire was most likely not accidental, but no one else is being sought in connection with the incident.

“Investigators will now prepare their findings for the coroner ahead of an inquest into the deaths.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of those who died.”
