DEMOLITION has begun of a landmark 35-metre chimney at a former South Yorkshire brickworks.
Work on the project at the former Park Hill plant, Wombwell, will take around another five weeks to complete.
The decision to demolish the chimney has been taken by site owner Barnsley Council following structural advice, but the former brick kilns will remain in place.
A specialist steeplejack demolition company - Churchill Specialist Contracting - is carrying out the work on behalf of Barnsley Council.
The chimney will be demolished by hand rather than machine as it is a more controlled method of demolition.
All rubble will be removed from site afterwards.
About one metre of chimney will remain above ground level, capped off with concrete.
