'Fantastic achievement' at weight loss camp

YOUNG people who lost weight at a specialist camp this summer have scooped a top honour at this year's Rotherham Sports Awards.

As many as 53 young people from the town took part in the Carnegie Weight Management Camp, funded by NHS Rotherham, and lost an impressive 53 stones between them.

To celebrate their achievement, youngsters were nominated for the Rising to the Challenge award.

It recognises anyone who has changed their life through sport and activity, gaining the benefits of an active lifestyle and becoming an inspiration to those around them.

Deven Bowler, 16, was at the ceremony last night to collect the award on behalf of all her fellow Rotherham campers.

She was accompanied by her family, Professor Paul Gately, director of Carnegie Weight Management and Gill Harrison, NHS Rotherham Public Health Specialist, who nominated the group.

Gill said: "This award is a fantastic achievement, the children were nominated to show how proud we are of all their efforts at camp and since they returned home.

"They all thoroughly deserve this award. It's great to see that others in the region can see the changes the children have made to their lives."

Professor Gately said: "While seeing the improvements in the children's fitness and well-being on camp is a great success, winning this award means that they have something else to be proud of.

"This award recognises that they have all made a massive effort to make a huge difference to their lives."

One in three children and 60 per cent of the adult population in Rotherham is classified as overweight or obese.

NHS Rotherham is investing 3.5 million over the next three years on attempts to reverse the problem.
