A family have escaped from a 'serious' house fire that broke out in a premises on a residential Sheffield street.

Police, fire and rescue and the ambulance service were called out to the blaze in Catherine Road, Burngreave at around 9pm last night.

A fire and rescue spokesman confirmed a family were inside the property when the fire started, but managed to exit the premises shortly afterwards.

They said: "This was a serious fire that led to the property being very badly damaged, particularly the floors.

"No-one was injured in the fire, and none of the neighbouring houses were affected."

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed a cordon was put in place at the property due to 'concerns over the safety of the structure of the property'.
