CAMPAIGNERS fear hundreds of thousands of Sheffield residents are failing to take precautions against carbon monoxide poisoning.
A questionnaire carried out by the Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed! campaign found 84 per cent of Sheffield residents questioned were aware of the danger posed by the deadly substance but only 45 per cent had a carbon monoxide alarm.
The organisation fears the response could mean as many as 300,000 of Sheffield’s 550,000 residents not having an alarm.
In many cases, researchers found the reason is likely to be because people mistakenly think that their smoke alarm will detect carbon monoxide.
TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp, who is backing the campaign to promote carbon monoxide alarms, said: “Carbon monoxide can kill you without any warning. Please make sure you have an audible carbon monoxide alarm.”
Carbon monoxide has no colour, taste or smell.
