NEARLY 5,000 families in Barnsley have lost out in changes to tax credits, according to government figures obtained by town MP Michael Dugher.
The cuts, which came into effect on Saturday, hit 4,250 families on middle incomes who lost their entire child tax credit, worth £545 a year.
Another 750 working couples earning less than £17,000 lost their working tax credit - worth up to £3,870 per year.
Mr Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, said: “This is a deeply unfair change from a government that is increasingly out of touch with parents who are feeling the squeeze and struggling to juggle work and family life.
“It cannot be right to cut support for working families on low and middle incomes while handing out tax cuts to millionaires.
“We desperately need action to get jobs and growth to Barnsley.
“The Government must change course.”
