Falling debris narrow escape

Have your say

EMERGENCY repairs have been carried out to a derelict shop in a village centre after a female pedestrian was nearly struck by falling debris from the roof.

The woman had just walked past the former Co-op shop in Thurgoland when part of the guttering fell onto the pavement, narrowly missing her and landing on the road.

The shop has been closed for several years and Barnsley Council contacted the owner, who carried out repairs to the building to make sure it did not pose a further safety threat.

Barnsley councillor Robert Barnard, who represents the area, has complained to council officials about the unsightly appearance of the building but has been told the borough council can only take action about the safety of buildings and not their appearance.
