Extra trams on city routes
EXTRA trams could be running on the streets of Sheffield in four years' time, transport bosses have revealed.
A bid for 14.3 million from the Government to build extra vehicles has been approved at regional level and a final decision will now be made by the Department for Transport.
The investment would provide four more trams, increasing the fleet from 24 to 28, providing more frequent services and relieving overcrowding.
A separate 30.5 million bid for park and ride sites linked by bus rapid transit schemes, called South Yorkshire Integr8, has also progressed to the final stage.
David Brown, director general of South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, said: "We will now be able to build the case for these two schemes which would bring real benefits to passengers in South Yorkshire.
"Supertram is a very popular system that offers high quality, reliable travel."
