Police have increased patrols in a popular walking area in Sheffield following a spate of arson attacks in recent weeks.

The Hartley Brook trail, which runs through Parson Cross and Ecclesfield, has been targeted by arsonists in recent weeks, with firefighters called out to tackle small blazes started in dry scrubland on most nights.

“Despite the rain we’ve been having, the ground out there is very dry at the moment,” said watch manager Jonathan Ward.

“We’ve been having problems in the area since the Easter break.”

“We’ve increased our cycle patrols of the area and have been working with an arson intervention team, getting out there and talking to youths about the problem.

“It seems to be having a positive effect.”
