Extra police officers will be on duty for the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday game on Saturday.
South Yorkshire Police said officers 'will not tolerate any level of disorder' associated with the derby, to be played at Oakwell Stadium.
Chief Inspector Mark James said: “I want to reassure the public in South Yorkshire that while it will be a very busy day on Saturday with a local football derby taking place in Barnsley, there will be extra police resources deployed and we will not tolerate any level of disorder.
“We will be able to provide a prompt and effective police response to offer a safe and welcoming environment for both members of the public conducting their daily business in the town and for fans who want to attend and enjoy the game.”
The game kicks off at 12.30pm.
