Exhibition of African art

AN exhibition of contemporary African art is to be held in Barnsley in September.

The show called Africa 53, takes place at The Gallery @ The Civic and the Cooper Gallery from September 16 to November 4.

The exhibition aims to go beyond the cliched images of Africa by showcasing modern art pieces which comment on Africa's troubled history and the continent's values and traditions.

The exhibition's name is a reference to the 53 independent nations which Africa was colonised into.

It will also feature an informal discussion with some of the artists involved.
