Ex Tesco drivers stage a protest ahead of their tribunal hearing

Almost 200 former Tesco delivery drivers, waving flags, staged a colourful protest in Sheffield city centre before an employment tribunal hearing into their sacking.

The 184 ex-Tesco drivers accuse the supermarket giant of failing to consult before dismissing them in August 2012 from the firm’s distribution centre in Doncaster, and transferring their employment to Eddie Stobart Ltd - from which they were then made redundant.

Asked at the hearing if he knew before the transfer of the workers from Tesco to Eddie Stobart Ltd that they were going to be made redundant, David Pickering, managing director of ESL, admitted: “Yes”.

The hearing is set to continue all this week.
