The former mayor of Rotherham who stepped down after three weeks in office has been arrested on suspicion of a historic sex attack.
Coun Barry Dodson, aged 68, resigned at the end of June citing ‘personal reasons’.
A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “A 66-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of indecent assault.
He was an independent councillor.
“The offence is alleged to have happened in 1987 against a 13-year-old girl.
“The man, who is from the Rotherham area, was arrested on Friday, July 11 and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.”
Coun John Foden was elected Mayor of Rotherham for 2014 to 2015 at a full meeting of Rotherham Council on Wednesday, July 2.
Coun Foden, who performed the role last year , will resume the duties for the remainder of this civic year, alongside his wife, Kath.
